Makayla Schwartz, center, with (from left) fiance Allen Chartier, daughter Maylea Schwartz and Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr after she is officially sworn in Monday morning as the newest member of the Sterling Police Department.

The Sterling Police Department has a new officer, following a swearing-in ceremony Monday, Dec. 4.

Makayla Schwartz, a Sterling native, was brought on to the department as a cadet in 2016. The SPD’s cadet program is a way for the department to recruit local individuals, Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr noted during the ceremony.

Normally, he explained, the department hires individuals who have already been through a police academy and received Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. With the cadet program, the SPD pays for the recruit to attend the academy. “We get someone who is local, has ties to the community; someone who’s vested, has a buy in already,” he said, adding that the cadets must make a minimum four-year commitment to the SPD.

Kerr said the selection process is “very extensive.” Schwartz was selected for the program in the fall of 2016, but was working to finish her bachelor’s degree at the University of Wyoming, where she majored in psychology and minored in criminal justice. So the department waited a year and enrolled her in the academy at Otero Junior College this fall. She started in late August and completed the program last week, graduating on Nov. 29.

Kerr said he is excited to have Schwartz on board, calling her a person who “has a lot of drive, a lot of motivation, a lot of ideas.”

Schwartz said she became interested in a law enforcement career while at college. Ultimately, she’d like to become a detective, but she is excited to learn about the patrol aspect of policing as she works her way up to that.

During the ceremony, Sterling City Clerk Deb Forbes administered the oath of office, then Kerr directed Schwartz in reciting the police officer’s code of ethics, which is a commitment to lead a life of integrity, both personally and professionally. Every member of the force pledges to follow the code of ethics, Kerr noted.

In introducing her to the community, Kerr noted that Schwartz graduated from Sterling High School in 2012. She enjoys spending time with her family and exploring the outdoors.

Schwartz’ daughter, Maylea, and fiance, Allen Chartier, pinned on her badge and collar brass to conclude the ceremony.

Now that Schwartz is officially part of the force, she’ll undergo an intensive 18-week field training program before being put out on solo patrols, Kerr explained.

Sterling Police Department offers tips for safe travels

Staff report

The Sterling Police Department sent out safety tips for travelers Thursday, Dec. 21, as the season’s first winter storm hit the area.

“With the holiday season in full swing, the Sterling Police would like to wish you peace and happiness,” the SPD’s press release stated. “Unfortunately, this time of year our roadways become even more crowded while having more distracted and intoxicated drivers. Sadly, in our celebration, we can become victims of accidents and tragedy.”

To ensure residents have “a wonderful and safe holiday season,” the department offered this advice:

• Always buckle up.
• DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Call for a taxi or have a designated driver.
• Do not drive if you are tired. Pull over someplace and rest before continuing on.
• NO DISTRACTED DRIVING! Do not text, check emails, or check social media while driving.
• Observe the speed limit. If you are traveling over the holidays allow yourself enough time to drive to your destination without speeding.
• Do not pass if you cannot see enough clear road ahead to pass safely.
• Be prepared for winter driving conditions.
• Clean your windows of frost and other obstructions before driving.
• Make sure your vehicle is mechanically sound.
• Make sure the tires are designed for winter travel.
• In case your vehicle gets stuck, keep extra clothing, blankets and some food in the vehicle.

The department also had a warning against unsafe driving habits:

“We have zero tolerance for intoxicated and distracted drivers!” the release stated. “Your Sterling Police Department will be out in force with extra patrols, making every attempt to help ensure your safety while you enjoy all our community has to offer.”

The statement continued, “Do not become a victim, or cause an innocent person to become a victim. Do everything necessary you can do to ensure your safety and the safety of others on our roadways. Have a safe and happy holiday.”

During the recent 10-day Holiday Party Enforcement period for the Heat Is On campaign, the SPD reported one arrest for DUI out of the 656 reported statewide.
