Man shoots at police during chase

By Jeff Rice
Staff writer

A Sterling man is in jail after he allegedly shot at police officers Sunday night. No one was injured in the incident, and police are still investigating.

According to a press release issued by the Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr Monday, Dillon Tadolina, 24, was walking in the 1100 block of N. Eighth Street (between Cleveland and Franklin streets) when an officer tried to contact him. Tadolini reportedly ran from the officer, who gave chase on foot, but lost sight of the suspect. At that point, the release said, the officer heard “what sounded like two gunshots coming from the proximity of the running male.”

Kerr said Sterling Police requested the assistance of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol to establish a perimeter in the neighborhood. By 11:00 p.m., thanks to citizen tips and search efforts, the suspect had been found in a back yard in the 400 block of Jackson Street.

“The area was immediately contained and secured by law enforcement, mitigating the threat to the public,” Kerr’s statement said.

That didn’t end the incident, however, as Tadolini refused to give himself up for nearly three hours. When he was finally taken into custody, Kerr said, “a firearm was located on the suspect,” but gave no details on what kind of firearm it was.

Tadolini was jailed on a list of charges: Attempted first degree murder, felony menacing, possession of weapons by a previous offender, obstructing a peace officer, and second degree criminal trespass.

In addition, Tadolini was wanted for a long list of warrants on previous charges: Aggravated robbery, second-degree assault, felony menacing, possession of weapons by a previous offender, violation of a protection order, and harassment.

Kerr said police continue their investigation of the incident and have asked anyone who saw or heard the incident to call the Sterling Police Department at 970-522-3512 or Crime Stoppers at 970-522-3937.

2 new officers join Sterling Police Department

Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr, second from right, with (from left) newly promoted Corporal Jamie Foster and new Officers Tyler Chromicz and Spencer Kind.

By Sara Waite
Editor

Monday, July 31, was “an exciting time” for the Sterling Police Department.

SPD Chief Tyson Kerr led a ceremony welcoming two new officers and celebrating the promotion of a third officer.

“Any time we get to swear in new people it’s very special to us,” he said. “They become part of our family and it’s an exciting time.”

After a blessing by Chaplain Jared Sonnenberg, Officers Tyler Chromicz and Spencer Kind took the oath of office from City Clerk Deb Forbes. Kerr then administered the police officers’ code of ethics, which all members of the SPD swear to follow.

Chromicz comes to Sterling from Colorado Springs, but graduated from high school in New Jersey. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and international studies, and a master’s in teaching. He joined the Denver Police Department in 2015.

Chromicz chose to become a police officer to follow in his father’s footsteps. He said his dad’s career in law enforcement served as a model that he strives for. He came to Sterling because he was looking to return to the small-town life that he is comfortable with.

He enjoys exercising, cycling, fishing and spending time with his wife.

Kind grew up in Fort Collins and earned his POST (Police Officer Standards and Training) certification in May. Sterling is his first job in law enforcement.

He said becoming a police officer was his lifelong ambition, from the time he was a child. When a friend of his dad’s visited their home with his patrol car, he said it solidified that dream.

“It’s always been a calling for me,” he said.

Kind was familiar with Sterling because his family traveled through it to visit his grandparents in McCook, Neb. He said he’s always been interested in the town and has enjoyed seeing it grow and change. He is looking forward to being a part of that growth.

He enjoys recreational shooting, working out and landscaping. He is a big fan of the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos, and loves Marvel superheroes.

After Chromicz and Kind were pinned with their collar brass and badges by their respective fathers, the spotlight turned to Jamie Foster, who was promoted to corporal.
Foster joined the department about a year ago, coming from the Burlington Police Department. He has been in law enforcement for about six years.

“While he’s been with us for a short period of time, I think he’s earned credibility and the respect of his peers, and I know the command staff,” Kerr said. “He’s level headed; he brings common sense to the table. He has some knowledge and wisdom and experience… He has earned this promotion.”

Forbes again administered the oath of office, and Kerr pinned Foster’s collar brass and badge before all three of the celebrated officers were congratulated by family, friends and colleagues who attended the ceremony.

Kerr said the addition of the two new officers brings the department to fully staffed.
