Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr administers the Code of Ethics for the department’s two newest officers, Josh Baier, left, and Paul McDaniel, Monday morning.

By Sara Waite
Editor

The Sterling Police Department welcomed two new officers Monday, March 13, during a swearing in ceremony at City Hall.

After taking the oath of office and pledging to follow the SPD’s Code of Ethics, officers Josh Baier and Paul McDaniel received their badges and collar brass, then were congratulated by fellow SPD employees and city of Sterling colleagues.

Baier comes to Sterling from the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked as a detention deputy and then patrol deputy. He was born in New York, but moved around a lot in his youth as his father was in the U.S. Army.

His family came to Colorado in 2008, and in 2009 he graduated from Centauri High School in La Jara. He attended college at Adams State University and received his his POST (police officer standards and training) certification from the Trinidad Police Academy in 2012.

Baier enjoys date nights with his wife, Rebecca, as well as playing games and working out.

He said he decided to enter law enforcement because he was looking for the same brotherhood he thought he could only find in the military, and so he could better help “those that I can.”

He joined the SPD because his wife was hired at Sterling Correctional Facility, and it was the closest agency.

McDaniel is a northeast Colorado native, born and raised in Wray. After high school, he attended Morgan Community College, earning his EMT certification. He then went on to the International Alert Academy in Big Sandy, Texas to earn his law enforcement and emergency response skills certification.

After returning to Colorado, McDaniel worked as a detention deputy in the Yuma County Jail and attended the Adams County Police Academy to receive his Colorado POST certification, graduating in 2016. In 2017, he began working as a patrol deputy for Yuma County, and was involved in many aspects of the department there, including serving as a K9 handler.

McDaniel enjoys hunting, fishing and working out, in addition to spending time with his wife, Rachel, and two young daughters, Rebeka and Evelyn.
He said chose a law enforcement career because he enjoys the line of work and helping others. He wanted to come to Sterling because it is a larger agency and he felt it would give him more opportunities to use the skills he’s learned.
